Three-year-old Samaya is a regular patient at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW), where she receives treatment for Angelman Syndrome and an airway disorder. On their 35th admission at CHW, the Ronald McDonald House Greater Western Sydney Day Pass Program became a source of refuge for mother and daughter.
A much-needed change of scenery away from beeping machines
Walking over to Ronald McDonald House Westmead from the hospital gave Samaya the chance to get out of the hospital setting once she was well enough to leave her bed. “This has been a long and lonely admission for us since our household is unwell. We didn’t have any visits in the two weeks we’ve been here. I haven’t gone home to see my three other kids either,” Zita shares.
Thus, the much-needed change of scenery was more than welcome, making them feel less isolated. Samaya was able to play on the outdoor play equipment. Afterwards, they took advantage of the quiet and relaxing spaces around the House, putting their feet up and enjoying some peaceful moments away from beeping machines and dreary wards.
During their visit, they also availed of some delicious Grab&Go meals. Zita’s verdict? “They were not only tasty but allowed us to have a nice, hearty meal that didn’t cost anything at all—a bonus when food choices are limited and expensive.”
“Ronald McDonald House is so bright and welcoming; just a breath of fresh air for those stuck in the hospital. The ability to get out of the hospital setting, even for a short period, did wonders for us, physically and emotionally.”

A message to Ronald McDonald House supporters
Zita says, “Please continue to support Ronald McDonald House in Westmead, especially their Day Pass Program. It allows parents and carers like me and kids like Samaya to have some respite from the hospital when we need it most.”
